Anyone who speaks Russian and is well-versed in the history of Russia will be surprised that an exhibition of the Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden would be captioned with Lenin’s quote: "Chto Delat?", This question, which translates to "What is to be done?" and is originally from Chernyshevsky, the Russian author, is the name of a collective of artists, critics, philosophers and writers that was founded in St. Petersburg in 2003. Allegro Vivace
12.2.2011 – 22.5.2011
In the late 1960s, Daniel Buren (French, born 1938), purposefully renouncing the artist’s studio, began adorning public spaces with his posters, the so-called affichages sauvages. The colorful vertical stripes, precisely 3.4 inches wide, have become Buren’s trademark piece, a visual tool he has used to this day. Their form is deliberately banal, devoid of content or signification. They forcefully contradict the belief in the

9.11.2010 – 9.1.2011
Beginning in the 15th century, artists use the self-portrait to examine themselves and their role. In the history of art in the modern era, the format is inseparably tied to names such as Albrecht Dürer, Rembrandt van Rijn, and Max Beckmann. The development of artistic self-interrogation after 1945 has not been studied in depth. Showing works ranging from Pop Art to art of the late 1980s, this exhibition is designed to take a look at

The Tendency to Inclination
27.3.2010 – 24.5.2010
At the center of Stefan Müller‘s (*1971) artistic debate is his preoccupation with painting and the issue of what it might still formally mean for the present time after similar questions have already been posed to conceptual art and minimal art. Müller explores the canvas with a resolutely minimalist approach and is keen to complete his work without a single superfluous touch.

Baselitz
30 Years of Sculpture
21.11.2009 – 14.3.2010
The work of Georg Baselitz continually transgresses against pre-defined categories and congruity. The ambiguity of his works of art - but also the art historical, contemporary, biographical and image references as well as his ironic distance and love of experimentation - clearly demonstrate how he incessantly rethinks and rediscovers his craft.
