ROOM SERVICE - On The Hotel In The Arts And Artists In The Hotel (complete edition incl. installation views)

2014

35,00 Euro

This catalogue accompanying the exhibition at Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden looks at the phenomenon of the hotel from various perspectives and explores the subject in a refreshing new way with numerous essays on art, literature, design, and film. The exhibition features an extensive body of visual work by many different artists, including William Turner, Max Beckmann, George Grosz, and many other key figures, looking at the historical development of the hotel from the beginnings of a new culture of travel in the 19th century leading up to the works of Sophie Calle and Martin Kippenberger in the 20th century.

A tour of Baden-Baden’s major hotels complements the historical treatment of the subject with site-specific and performative works shown alongside painting, photography, and film. Christian Jankowski was invited to Brenners Park-Hotel & Spa as artist-in-residence to create a performative work for this site. A special part of the exhibition was designed by renowned curator Hans Ulrich Obrist, taking as his point of departure his legendary curatorial experiment HOTEL CARLTON PALACE: CHAMBRE 763 from 1993, where he held an unannounced exhibition in his 12-square-meter Paris hotel room with works by 70 artists. In this volume, a photographic stroll through the richly varied exhibition and descriptions of individual works document the show in all its dimensions.

HOTEL CARLTON PALACE CHAMBRE 763

2014

10,00 Euro

Paris, 22 August – 25 September 1993

In 1993 Hans Ulrich Obrist organised an unnanounced exhibition with works by 70 artists in the 11 square meters of a hotel room in Paris, in which he also lived for the duration of the exhibition. Among the participating artists were Alighiero Boetti, Hans-Peter Feldmann, Fischli / Weiss, Isa Genzken, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Douglas Gordon, Raymond Hains, Annette Messager, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Gerhard Richter, Allen Ruppersberg, Reiner Ruthenbeck, Andreas Slominski and Erwin Wurm.

With this publication Hans Ulrich Obrist takes the reader on an imaginary tour through his legendary exhibition, illustrated with numerous photogaphs by Pierre Leguillon and others. Original written communication between Obrist and the artists as well as a site map, indicating where the works were installed, enhance the documentation. The book is published on the occasion of a re-interpretation of this extraordinary show, within the framework of the exhibition "ROOM SERVICE - On The Hotel in the Arts and Artists in the Hotel" at Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden.

Macht der Machtlosen / Power of the Powerless

2013

20 Euro

Can art lend a voice to segments of the population that go unheard? Can it open up new spheres of action and empower the powerless? The exhibition explores these questions through contemporary works of art.
Flight and displacement in the Mexican city of Ciudad Juárez are themes addressed in the large-scale installation La Promesa by Teresa Margolles, which is being shown for the first time in Europe. The murals of Egyptian artist Alaa Awad bear witness to a new form of protest in the Arab Spring. The works take on local relevance through the neighborhood initiative of the Prinzessinnengartin from Berlin’s Kreuzberg, which developed the Urban Gardening Project together with local school children and refurbished the museum’s cafe with an ecological and sustainable design.

Elizabeth Peyton HERE SHE COMES NOW

2013

32 Euro

This publication groups together Elizabeth Peyton's portraits of musicians such as David Bowie, Kurt Cobain, Pete Doherty, Jonas Kaufmann and Jessye Norman in moments of performance for the first time. Expressed in these portraits is Peyton's intensive focus on the vulnerable and at the same time expressive moment of artistic creativity: that moment in which the musician appears before their audience. The photographs, snapshots from live performances that underlie most of her works, are also presented in the exhibition catalogue alongside the artist's works and with equal weighting. The catalogue brings together oil paintings and works on paper from the last 20 years.

BILDERBEDARF. Braucht Gesellschaft Kunst?/ The Civic and the Arts

2012

20 Euro

The catalog was published on the occasion of the exhibition "BILDERBEDARF. The Civic and the Arts." (20.10.2012- 17.02.2013) at the Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden.

"This exhibition puts forth the idea that an element of the public mandate of a publicly funded art institution consists in meeting the existing demand for images and symbols relevant to the processes that civil society is undergoing. It does not, however, intend to claim that every artist whose work is politically or socially engaged has a correspondingly direct effect on society. Rather, artists and curators often examine significant issues without being able to determine if this has an impact. A fact that is often used as proof, not least by critics and journalists, of the inability of art to influence society. However, anyone looking to the recent past will know better."

Solch ungeahnte Tiefen / This Undreamt Descent. Wangechi Mutu

2012

20 Euro
"The 'Undreamt Descent' mentioned in the title is by no means a slow and controlled downwards movement, but rather an uncertain stumbling and letting go, reminiscent of a descent into a preconscious state of mind. The biography of the artist, a point of departure for all her works, appears to be full of political and very real associations. A Kenyan immigrant to the United States who has won great acclaim far beyond her new home in New York City, Wangechi Mutu seems to have decided to work with, rather than against, all of the stereotypical mental images the viewer might associate with her background."

The catalogue is published on the occasion of the solo exhibition "Solch ungeahnte Tiefen / This Undreamt Descent - Werke von Wangechi Mutu" (14.7.-30.9.2012) at the Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden.

Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis - A Romantic Exhibition. Handbook by Jan De Cock

2012

20 Euro
Jan De Cock creates structures in space with an architectural flair that operate as complex systems of interlocking fragments. The beholder is compelled to engage the formal language of highly condensed sculptures made of industrially produced materials that assemble repetitions and variations of individual modules into expansive overall compositions. The publication is designed as a handbook offering a systematically structured overview of Jan De Cock's art. Detailed descriptions interweave to produce an encyclopedic wealth of details and minute observations that ultimately call the very idea of the organized survey in question. The artist himself has already published six so-called "Cahiers" that, together with the handbook, illustrate his preoccupation with a twentieth-century icon: Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis." Jan De Cock, born in 1976 in Brussels, has exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and at Tate Modern in London.

ON TASTE – the good, the bad and the really expensive

2011

18,50 Euro

At a time in which such terms and “good taste“ or “bad taste“ have become all but exchangeable, it can be the staging or presentation of a consumer good or work of art that determines how desirable something is. What seems to matter most is expensive taste. Today, more than ever before, this is what serves to achieve socioeconomic differentiation. Unlike during the founding years of first museums in Germany, “taste” no longer serves the aesthetic education of the middle classes but has rather evolved into a category of manipulated preferences. The exhibition broaches this issue primarily by means of contemporary positions.

A catalogue featuring texts by Johan Holten, Hendrik Bündge and Dirk Teuber , as well as numerous images, was published by Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther König, Cologne, 152 pages, (German / English) on the occasion of the first exhibition curated by Johan Holten.

This is the first catalogue published under the direction of Johan Holten. With texts by Johan Holten, Hendrik Bündge and Dirk Teuber, Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther König, Cologne, 152 pages, German / English with numerous illustrations.
