SKITS - 13 exhibitions in 9 rooms

26.11.2016 – 5.3.2017

To mark the reopening of its upper floor in November, 2016, the Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden will present ‘Skits –13 Ausstellungen in 9 Räumen’ (Skits – 13 Exhibitions in 9 Rooms), a solo exhibition of the Berlin-based artist, Michael Müller.

The exhibition is an extension of the 18-part exhibition cycle that Müller began in 2013 in the Galerie Thomas Schulte, Berlin. The exhibition cycle bases itself on the 100-year anniversary of the year 1913, where Robert Musil’s “The Man Without Qualities” begins. Similar to Musil's novel, Müller is concerned with all the possibilities of artistic expression and understanding, with comprehension, definition, and interpretation. Through continuous roll reversals from artist to curator in the alternating exhibitions – presenting sculptures, paintings, drawings, films and installations, works by other artists and non-artists, curated mini-exhibitions and group shows, accompanied by various performances, concerts, lectures and talks – Müller seeks distance from the art industry, and thereby questions the various functions of all its protagonists – from the gallerist to the collector to the critic and above all from the curator to the artist. A daring, challenging experiment that builds on a dense network of references, until it, finally, out of many sensuous single parts, forms a complete, meaningful whole.

The solo exhibition in the Staatlichen Kunsthalle Baden-Baden introduces four completely new aspects to the exhibition cycle, as well as a remix and reincarnation of the existing works and concepts. Curated by Hendrik Bündge.

Michael Müller (*1970), born in Ingelheim am Rhein, lives and works in Berlin. He studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf under Magdalena Jetelová. Recently, his work was presented as the solo exhibition ‘Wer Spricht?’ at the KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin (2015). The accompanying exhibition catalog will be published in September, 2016 by Hatje Cantz. Michael Müller is also one of the founders of the Kunstsaele Berlin, which opened in 2010. Since 2015 he has taught as a professor the Universität der Künste, Berlin.
