What can we learn today from Yvonne Rainer's influential 1966 work TRIO A? In this workshop, we will explore the philosophical, physical, and historical relevance of TRIO A through learning a portion of the dance and a subsequent discussion. Although Rainer's famous "No Manifesto" was not written about this dance, the dance itself is a manifesto. Its form, vocabulary, and performing stance challenge traditional choreographic methods and modes of representation. Nearly fifty years after its first performance, the impact of the revolutionary ideas and work of Rainer and her fellow Judsonians is still being felt in the current choreographic scene.
Pat Catterson first collaborated with Yvonne Rainer to dance TRIO A in 1969. She has assisted and danced for her since she returned to choreography in 1999. Catterson has taught and danced TRIO A countless times over the past fifty years, and has come to believe that learning this dance is the best way to understand the aesthetic shift it represents.
The workshop will be held at the Kunsthalle.
